FAQ's - OfficeStation Networking FAQ

1.
Can all users surf the Internet at the same time?

Yes, one of the best features of the OfficeStation is that all users can surf the Internet independently from each other.

2.
What is the maximum cable length that the Net Star can support?

OfficeStation Net Star can support up to a maximum of 100-meters (CAT5e).

3.
How many IP addresses can be assigned to the computer under Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional or Home Edition?

Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional or Home Edition allow account users to use multiple IP addresses per network connection for multiple IP numbering schemes, such as public addresses used for the Internet and private addresses, and for multiple logical IP networks on the same physical network segment.

4.
Can I use OfficeStation as a remote solution?

Yes,?fficeStation can be installed at a remote location. The OfficeStation only requires TCP/IP as the transport method to communicate with the Host PC. One thing to note is that if a firewall solution is in place, you will need to make sure that the correct ports are forwarded to the correct hosts. Use the ports below as a reference:

?orward all of these ports to the correct IP Address of the Host PC on the router/firewall.

TCPUDP
27605
3581
3597
3645
1283
3581

5.
Will OfficeStation work properly in a Windows 2000/2003 server/domain environment?

The OfficeStation will work perfectly in a server/domain environment. If the Host PC has the ability to communicate properly within the domain, then the OfficeStation will fit in perfect once implemented. With S/W Version 4.03.025 or above, OfficeStation can be deployed directly onto the Windows 2000 Server / 2003 Server with 30 OfficeStation clients connectivity!

6.
How do I properly configure my network if I want to statically assign all IP Addresses?

We do have a sample network configuration for our?OfficeStation products. Please click here to view this diagram (Requires Acrobat Reader).

7.
How secure is the OfficeStation's proprietary WoIP protocol?

The?fficeStation's WoIP protocol implements 128-bit encryption across the network for added security.

8.
Does OfficeStation support Gigabit Ethernet?

As of right now, the OfficeStation?nly supports speeds up to 100Mbits/sec. However, the?fficeStation should still work fine in a Gigabit Ethernet environment.

9.
What is the minimum bandwidth requirement of the OfficeStation?
The minimum bandwidth for each OfficeStation is 1-3 KByte / sec. (Basic Word and Excel operation.)

10.
What is the maximum bandwidth requirement of the OfficeStation?
Maximum bandwidth for each OfficeStation is 1.8 MByte/sec for video (e.g. mpeg) transmission.

11.
What is the operating bandwidth of the OfficeStation?
The normal operating bandwidth of the OfficeStation is 10-40 KByte/sec. (When switching between Word and Excel; scrolling documents.)

12.
What is the minimum Bandwidth rate for minimum performance?
The minimum bandwidth rate is 6.25 KByte/sec.

13.
Will OfficeStation generate a lot of packet traffic into the network?
No. The overall bandwidth requirement (network traffic) depends on the demand of the bandwidth/data transfer on all other devices and srevices/protools/traffic under the same subnet mask. OfficeStation will dynamically utilise all bandwidth it can get from the network for best performance whenever possible. OfficeStation only send out packets of changing screen data, which normally nearly nothing in real operation. For the full screen data transfer, it is about 10-40 KByte/sec.

14.
What is the screen refresh rate of the OfficeStation?
The refresh rate of the OfficeStation is 50 times/sec.

15.
How do I use a dynamic IP address when the Host PC is connected to a Router?

Using a crossover adapter to connect the OfficeStation terminal to the Host PC. If you use a crossover cable to connect to the Host PC, you do not need a crossover adpater. You can only directly connect one OfficeStation to a Host PC by using a LAN adpater. To connect several OfficeStation you need to install as many LAN adapters equal to the number of OfficeStation terminal(s) that will be connected to the Host PC.

16.
How do I use a dynamic IP address when the Host PC is connected to a Router?
Router allocates the IP address dynamically to the Host PCs and OfficeStation terminal(s). Users do not need to set the IP address. Set the network configuration to dynamic IP address in the set up window.

17.
If a router/hub is connected to the Host PC, how do I coonect an OfficeStation terminal to the Host PC with a static IP address?
You have to allocate the static IP address of the Host PC and the OfficeStation to OfficeStation terminal(s) through a router/hub. ( Contact your network manager to get the Static IP address of the Host PC).

18.
I am not connected and a screen displays the "DHCP server was not found" message.

OfficeStation is set to get the IP address dynamically. If you enter the setup screen of the OfficeStation by pressing setup, you can check in the "Network tab and make sure that the "Get Dynamic IP Address" option is selected. To use this option the router has to have DHCP server functionality activated. If you do not have a router, you have to install a Host PC that can allocate the DHCP addresses on your network. When you connect the OfficeStation directly to a Host PC, you can not use this option. In this case, select "Use Static IP address" and input IP address. Using IP router, check whether the DHCP function is activated, power is on, and LAN cable is connected.

- Turn off the OfficeStation terminal and wait serveral seconds, and then turn it back on.

- If you use a Firewall program and certain outer protocols are blocked, you might not be able to connect to the OfficeStation terminal.
